Studied for the Catholic priesthood for five years and lived in an experimental religious community whose way of life was inspired by St Francis of Assisi. Here he developed an interest in the spirituality of monasticism and contemplative practice. Worked for the Bishop of East London as a community worker during the building of Canary Wharf, working with tenants groups whose lives were blighted by the development and then worked with a Bangladeshi Community Project based on Brick Lane, East London developing projects aimed at social regeneration. Studied various ways of engaging with the soul such as Christian Mysticism, the Enneagram, Mythology, Jungian Psychology, Spiritual Direction and Masculine Spirituality.
